Hey there! As a local living in this beautiful valley, it is surprisingly easy to fall into a routine and completely overlook the amazing spots right in our own backyard. Sometimes it takes hosting family—especially when there are energetic 6-to-12-year-olds in tow—to remind you just how much fun is sitting right down the road.
What made exploring with kids so wonderful wasn't just the activities—it was how quick and easy the logistics were. None of these spots require long, restless car rides, which meant we could pop out for a quick, high-energy adventure and still easily have everyone back at the house in time for meals, downtime, or bedtime. It made the whole trip feel relaxed instead of rushed.
Every single one of these stops is between 5 and 20 minutes from the property, making them low-stress, highly memorable, and packed with authentic Fraser Valley charm.
1. Lavender Lemonade & Personal Pints of Ice Cream (5 Minutes Away!)
Off the charts with the Harrison Lavender Farm. Just a minute down the road from us is Harrison Lavender Farm. It's a quiet, peaceful spot where you can sip cold lavender lemonade right among the purple and green fields. Keep an eye out for their special spring collaboration with Banter Ice Cream—they do little personal pints of lavender honey ice cream that I have been completely obsessed with! You can also pick up handmade soaps and essential oils to take home.
For another sweet fix nearby, stop by The Farmhouse Natural Cheeses. Famous for their artisan cheeses, they also scoop rich Birchwood Dairy ice cream (the raspberry chocolate is my personal go-to).
2. Local Racing at the Agassiz Speedway (10 Mins Away)
Having lived here for years, I’ve occasionally heard the distant rumble of the racetrack echoing faintly through the trees, but we had somehow never gone in person! We finally went for race night, and it was an absolute blast, especially watching a kid who loves cars get so excited. Their local racing season typically runs through September!
Before the race starts, they let the kids head right down to meet the drivers, collect signatures, and grab goody bags. They even let my six-year-old nephew sit inside a real race car, which was pretty amazing! The entry-level class of cars is literally called the "Hornets," and they sound just like a swarm of angry little hornets zipping around the oval. The energy is pure small-town community fun, and the concession stand serves classic, affordable hot dogs and burgers. It’s a fantastic local outing to add to your list!
3. A Hands-On Afternoon at Kilby Historic Site (20 Mins Away)
Kilby is a total gem for families and you can easily spend half a day here:
Feeding the Animals: Grab a $2 bag of feed at the gate for the cows, goats (look out for 17-year-old Peppermint!), ducks, and the resident turkey couple. The turkey’s wife is named Adele—which, as an Adele myself, I found particularly amusing
Old-Fashioned Fun: Kids can try different classes like butter making, bead crafts, or lawn chess. If you wander up to the museum, the staff will often bring out vintage historical toys for kids to play with.
The Cafe & Beach Walk: Do not leave without stopping at the Kilby Cafe. Their homemade baking is incredible (the brownies and carrot cake are top-tier), and the fresh sandwiches are delicious. Afterward, stroll down to Kilby’s sandy shoreline for a quick dip or a walk along the water.
4. A Cozy Dip at the Mineral Pool (10 Mins Away)
If you want a relaxing soak, head into the village to the Harrison Hot Springs Public Mineral Pool. Located right on Hot Springs Road, this indoor pool recently got a clean, fresh coat of paint and a gentle cosmetic touch-up while keeping its simple, vintage charm. It’s an easy, low-key place to unwind after a big day out.
BONUS: The Agassiz Fall Fair & Corn Festival!
If you’re planning a trip during September, you are in for a huge local treat. The Agassiz Fall Fair and Corn Festival is one of the oldest running fairs in BC, complete with a classic parade, agriculture displays, carnival rides, and the famous goat races. It's the ultimate small-town celebration and an absolute highlight for kids of all ages!
